Department of Journalism views qualified humanbeings and citizens as the source of all values. In this respect, it seeks to educate prospective journalists, experts, researchers, media adminitrators and academics who will take up important positions in various fields of audio-visual media.

The complex societal structure of the modern world and the compelling need for qualified manpower entails specialization in the field of journalism as it is the case in many other fields today. It has become increasingly important both in our country and across the world to generate and deliver true news and information to people in right time via the right means.   

Communication and news making play a vital role for societies, institutions and democracies to function properly, which renders the role of schools of communication in general and departments of journalsim in particular a lot more important. In this sense, a great mission awaits students and alumni of journalism; they are the individuals who are devoted to media ethics and universal values, intellectually well-equipped, productive, respectful to both themselves and the society they live in, autonomous, independent, and impartial critical thinkers who feel public responsibility. Those individuals will contribute a lot to their environment wherever they go.  

With this mission in mind, our department seeks to educate a creative and productive generation of professionals equipped with modern knowledge and techniques. Thus, in addition to journalism courses, our curriculum offers a wide range of courses in the fields of radio, television and cinema, public relations and advertising, economics and business management, international relations, sociology, history, philosophy, law, art and literature. Our department offers four comprehensive programs under Journalism including “Journalism,” “Media Economics and Management,” “Media-Broadcasting Techniques,” and “Informatics.”

As the medium of education is 30 % English since 2012-2013 academic year, our students are required to get two semesters of English language education before they begin college. Our goal is to have our students get the necessary language skills to perform their profession. In the freshman year, our students take the basic courses. After the first year, they could take elective courses in line with their personal academic interests.  

We update our curricula to keep up with the changes in our society and the rest of the modern world. We encourage interactive teaching styles to ensure student participation and productivity. In this vein, the Marmara Media Center that operates under our college, gives our students ample opportunity to conduct both individual and collective research and projects. Our students, from 2012-2013 academic year on, will have the opportunity to carry out double-major in either Radio, Television and Cinema or Public Relations, and will hold two diplomas. Also, as part of our exchange agreements (Erasmus and Farabi programs), our students may choose to continue their education at another university in Turkey or abroad up to two semesters. Our department, in addition to undergraduate education, also offers masters and PhD programs in “Journalism,” Media Economics and Management,” and “Informatics.”    

Our most recent masters program, “Modern Broadcasting and Broadcasting Management” has started in 2012-2013. Alumni of Journalism have a wide range of job opportunities. Our alumni follow their career in such fields as audio-visual and printed media, NGOs, and research centers as experts, researchers and administrators. Some also choose to work in the academia.
